چکیده

This paper describes a method for correcting the dynamically induced bias errors in wind tunnel model att i tude measurements using measured modal properties of the model system. At NASA Langley Research Center, the predominant instrumentation used to measure model attitude is a servo-accelerometer device that senses the model attitude with respect to the local vertical. Under smooth wind tunnel operating conditions, this inertial device can measure the model attitude with an accuracy of 0.01 degree. During wind tunnel tests when the model is responding at high dynamic amplitudes, the inertial device also senses the centrifugal acceleration associated with model vibration. This centrifugal acceleration results in a bias error in the model attitude measurement. A study of the response of a cantilevered model system to a simulated dynamic environment shows significant bias error in the model attitude measurement can occur and is vibration mode and amplitude dependent. For each vibration mode contributing to the bias error, the error is estimated from the measured modal properties and tangential accelerations at the model attitude device. Linear superposition is used to combine the bias estimates for individual modes to determine the overall bias error as a function of time. The modal correction model predicts the bias error to a high degree of accuracy for the vibration modes characterized in the simulated dynamic environment.

Onboard Flow Sensing for Rotary-Wing UAV Pitch Control in Wind

Due to their size, small rotorcraft are vulnerable to external flow disturbances that are challenging to flight stability and control. This paper describes preliminary results from using onboard flow measurements to augment inertial sensors for attitude control. We derive a dynamic model that captures the aerodynamic effects of wind on a single degree-of-freedom tandem-rotor test stand. A pair ...

Scaling Laws Applied to a Modal Formulation of the Aeroservoelastic Equations

A method of scaling is described that easily converts the aeroelastic equations of motion of a full-sized aircraft into ones of a wind-tunnel model. To implement the method, a set of rules is provided for the conversion process involving matrix operations with scale factors. In addition, a technique for analytically incorporating a spring mounting system into the aeroelastic equations is also p...

Comparison Final Velocity for Land Yacht with a Rigid Wing and Cloth Sail

The powering requirement of a land yacht is one of the most important aspects of its design. In this respect the wind tunnel testing is an effective design tool. In fact, changing the parameters of the vehicle and testing the changes in the wind tunnel will give us a better understanding of the most efficient vehicle, and yet it is time consuming, expensive, and has inherent scaling errors. Ano...

Experimental Investigations of Supersonic Flow around a Long Axisymmetric Body

A series of supersonic wind tunnel tests on an ogive-cylinder body were performed to investigate the pressure distribution, the boundary layer profiles, and the flow visualization at various angles of attack. All tests were conducted in the trisonic wind tunnel of the Imam Hossein University. The theoretical shock angle at different model positions compared well with those we obtained via Schi...
